Cosmetic gum treatment, also known as gum contouring or gum reshaping, is a dental procedure that is used to improve the appearance of the gums. This treatment is often used to correct uneven or excessive gum tissue, or to address a “gummy” smile where too much gum tissue is visible when a person smiles.
During the cosmetic gum treatment, a dentist or periodontist will use a laser or other dental instrument to remove or reshape the gum tissue. This may involve removing excess gum tissue to reveal more of the tooth or reshaping the gum line to create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort, and patients may experience some swelling and discomfort in the days following the procedure. However, most patients are able to return to normal activities within a day or two.
