Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment is a dental procedure that is used to treat and prevent gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and gums, which can lead to inflammation, infection, and damage to the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

Periodontal treatment may involve a variety of procedures, depending on the severity of the gum disease.

These Procedures May Include

Scaling and Root Planing: This is a non-surgical procedure that involves removing the buildup of plaque and tartar from the teeth and root surfaces. This helps to reduce inflammation and promote healing of the gums.

Periodontal Surgery: In cases where gum disease has caused significant damage to the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, periodontal surgery may be necessary. This may include procedures such as gum grafting, bone grafting, or guided tissue regeneration.

Antibiotics: In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to help control the bacterial infection that is causing gum disease.

Periodontal treatment is important because untreated gum disease can lead to serious complications, including tooth loss, bone loss, and even systemic health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections.

In addition to professional treatment, good oral hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing regularly, using an antibacterial mouthwash, and quitting smoking can help prevent and manage gum disease.

Patients who are experiencing symptoms of gum disease, such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums, should consult with a qualified dental professional to determine the best course of treatment for their individual needs.
